Ekaterina Larina, Ministry of Digital Development:
– Radio remains one of the most important and democratic channels of mass communications in the country.
More than 3.5 thousand valid licenses in the field of radio broadcasting are listed in the register of Roskomnadzor (RKN) based on the results of 2021, said Andrey content writing service Romanchenko, President of the Russian Academy of Radio (RAR). According to him, in 2022, during seven meetings of the Federal Competition Commission (FCC) for Television and Radio Broadcasting at RKN, 49 radio frequencies were put up for competition.
Andrey Romanchenko, Russian Academy of Radio:
– As a result, 14 broadcasters received 37 frequencies, as a result of which two new radio stations will soon appear in 11 cities of Russia, one in 31 regions, and three in Ufa.
Radio covers almost 86% of residents of cities with a population of over 100,000 people aged over 12, said the head of the RAR. If we count in absolute numbers, then radio in Russia includes 101 million people.
The average time spent consuming radio programs from January to June 2022, according to Mediascope, is 4 hours 19 minutes per day
More than 55% listen to the radio once a day, 80% - once a week, clarified the head of the customer support sector of the Radio and Press segment of Mediascope Pavel Mordayev. According to him, since 2020, the audience has stabilized - it has stopped declining. He added that he considers the statement about the lack of interest in radio among young people a myth.
To remain competitive, it is necessary to increase the monetization of streaming audio, including online broadcasting and podcasts, according to RAR. In Q1 2022, more than 28% of the audience regularly listened to podcasts.
Online radio is preferred by 36% of Russians. The number of exclusive Internet consumers has been growing for the last three years and already accounts for 8% of the total audience. According to academics, the native type of radio station podcasts will develop in the future.
The most common places for listening to the radio are in the car and at home, analysts found.
Pavel Mordaev, Mediascope:
– More than 73% of the audience listens to the radio in the car per month. On a smartphone and via a radio receiver, the numbers are approximately the same – 30.3 and 31.6%, respectively. And 16% find conversational content on a desktop computer, 11.9% – on a TV.
Listening to the radio via smart speakers is gaining popularity (9%); this method has shown the greatest growth recently, noted Andrey Romanchenko.
The audience of state radio stations is growing, the RAR president reported. The growth was 3.5% in April, and in September of this year it reached 5% compared to the same period last year.
Andrey Romanchenko, Russian Academy of Radio:
– The implementation of technologies at state radio stations has yielded results. This year, the project to modernize the VGTRK radio network is being completed: 1,868 FM transmitters have been put into operation in five years.
In Moscow, Vesti-FM has reached the second position in terms of audience attraction based on the results of the first half of the year. But the leaders in coverage in the Russian Federation have not changed over the past five years: Evropa+ has 13% of the total number of listeners, Avtoradio – 12.4%, Dorognoe Radio – 11.9 percent.
